Make sure you check out photographer Thomas Kneubühler’s project, Electric Mountains, at ProjexMtl Gallery, in the Belgo building downtown. Really stunning work, well worth the trip.

“When I first came to Canada, I remember driving on the autoroute 10 passing a mountain full of lights. It looked to me like a surreal landscape, almost like an installation or a land-art project. Later I found out that this mountain was illuminated by 500 000 watts of lights, was used for night skiing, and was called Mont Bromont. I was stunned. Growing up within a two hour drive of the Swiss alps, mountains were for me always a place synonymous for wilderness – a place hard of access, lacking the usual amenities.” (Thomas Kneubühler)Projex-Mtl Galerie is pleased to present “Electric Mountains”, a new project by Swiss-born artist Thomas Kneubühler.
Thomas Kneubühler is best known for his project “Office 2000” where city lights at night played a central role. In “Electric Mountains” Kneubühler turns his gaze to another type of landscape transformed by 500,000 watts of lights.
“Electric Mountains” began with a journey through the winter landscape of Quebec. Equipped with topographic maps, snowshoes and a large format camera, Kneubühler went out in search of these illuminated mountains. The result is a new series of night-time, large format, landscape photographs.
For the exhibition at Projex-Mtl, Kneubühler invited two artists to collaborate and respond to his work. Steve Bates has contributed the music to the video “The Mountain (Switch)”. Geoffrey Jones’ LED panel will illuminate “Mount Hortons”, a mountain that cannot be found on any map.
“Electric Mountains” is the result of team work. The artist wishes to thank the many people involved who made this project possible.
