World Water Day in a Montreal State of Mind

Yesterday, March 22 2011 was World Water Day, an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.  On this day, initiatives all over the world are brought together to showcase their efforts and activities that respond to the crisis and challenges taking place within their cities.

Montreal has without a doubt been working hard to address some of he issues we are faced with on a daily basis.  Launched in 2007, The RBC Blue Water Project is a ten-year multi-million dollar commitment to foster a culture of water stewardship worldwide.  Since then, RBC has provided hundreds of grants to organizations all over the world dedicated to helping protect and conserve watershed and ensure access to fresh drinking water.  To celebrate WWD, the RBC Blue Water Project has released a short documentary film highlighting issues within Montreal’s current infrastructure and how they affect the quality of our water.

The year’s World Water Day theme is Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge, and the short doc examines what can be done in Montreal to respond to a global challenge.

The story specifically explores the work of RBC Blue Water Project grant recipient Great Lakes United, one of six short films produced by renown Montreal Ad agency, CloudRaker, and internationally renowned documentary filmmakers EyeSteelFilm as part of the RBC Blue Water campaign. It looks at how cities can repurpose outdated infrastructure to help minimize negative impacts on our freshwater.

The film can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/rbcbluewaterproject

Another great reason to be a proud Montrealer today:)

Passport to Prana in Montreal

Yoga, in all of its shapes and forms, is becoming more and more accessible, desired and celebrated in the past couple of years. Understanding that yoga can offer a multitude of health benefits both mental and physical and can introduce an overall sense of well-being in one’s life has increased the interest in all types of health-conscious people, yoga beginners and pros alike.  If you’re like me and your yoga practice is a significant part of your life, or if you are someone that has thought about trying it, took one session, or is even too scared to step foot into a class but is so fixated on the challenge, then a new and creative opportunity is now at your fingertips.

Passport to Prana… and it means exactly that.  Prana, the sanskrit word for breath, or more accurately, extension of the breath, is what symbolizes life and empowers us with the ability as beings to be alive and free.  To practice yoga is to focus on this very gift that we are given and to accept life in a holistic and balanced state.  Your passport to a healthier lifestyle has just been made a whole lot easier!    A Torono based company has put together the perfect tool to experience yoga in our city in the most adventurous way possible!  A card, much like your own passport, gives you access to several participating yoga studios in your city,  entitling you to one class of your choice (most likely the walk-in classes available).  The cost?  Just 30$ gives you access to exactly 28 yoga studio’s within several areas in the city and even suburbs close-by.  So you do the math!  For approximately 1$ a class the discovery is all yours.  Curious about hot yoga?  Wondering what the difference is between Hatha and Ashtanga? Want to stretch your yoga boundaries and experience Kundalini or Kripalu practices?  Or do you want to be on the cutting-edge of your training and see what this flying yoga is all about?!  The idea is purely smart and thoughtful, built on the notion that we can do a better job of promoting the practices of yoga if we join together as a likeminded community rather than through competition.  It not only gives us the opportunity to explore and discover the world of yoga but to also meet talented teachers and eager students who are always willing to share their practice and experiences in the most humble way possible.

I was the happiest little yogi when Passport to Prana contacted me regarding this new program being introduced in Montreal, offering me the opportunity to try out the card and visit the studios across the city.   Read More…
